Dr. Charles Laszlo Receives Gold Medal

On May 26, the Canadian engineering profession’s top honour, the Gold Medal, was conferred on Dr. Charles Laszlo of Vancouver, B.C. Dr. Laszlo, who has a profound hearing loss, was honoured for his 30-year career developing assistive technologies for people with hearing disabilities, and for his efforts in making such devices generally available.

Dr. Laszlo is the founder of the Institute for Hearing Accessibility Research at the University of British Columbia, and Assistive Listening Device Systems, Inc. He was also the founding president of the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association and served as president of the International Federation of Hard of Hearing People. He is a member of the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia.

During the past 30 years he has worked on a wide range of scientific and biomedical engineering problems including basic research into auditory mechanisms, devices for people with hearing disabilities, instrumentation and devices for medicine, and computer applications in health care. He has over 170 publications and four patents to his credit.

In accepting the Gold Medal, Dr. Laszlo stated that the award "demonstrates that engineering success in Canada is not limited by disability."
