On the Road to Regeneration

John Ryan of BC, has spent the summer handcycling across Canada.

His vision for the tour is to raise enough money to give Canadian spinal cord regeneration research an injection of capital that could accelerate results. He hopes this could lead to the effective treatment of and, ultimately, a cure for spinal cord injury.

Ryan’s 5,400 mile, coast-to-coast journey started in May at Cape Spear, NF and is scheduled to finish in his hometown of Whistler, BC in September.

During the course of his Regeneration Tour, Ryan has attempted to hand-cycle his three-wheel bike at an average of 60 miles (96 km)
a day, on a three-day on, one-day off schedule. However, pressure sores forced him to take some unexpected time off.

By the end of July, Ryan, who was paralyzed in an accident in 1994, had raised over $500,000 towards his goal.

Ryan has maintained a website to educate the public about spinal cord regeneration and document his progress on tour.

As an avid skier and golfer, Ryan is known for his strong competitive drive. In 1998, he took part in the Seattle to Portland Bike Race which required him to cover 200 miles in two days.
