EnableLink

New EnableLink Features
In April, the Canadian Abilities Foundation unveiled the redesigned EnableLink. With the support of our design partners at the University of Toronto’s Assistive Technology Resource Centre and our sponsors at Workers’ Compensation Boards across Canada, EnableLink is now more accessible than ever! The site is now screen-reader friendly with the implementation of span tags, alternate text tags and tables. The contrasting colours, larger font size and new navigation system also make EnableLink more user friendly.

We would like to thank all the regular visitors to EnableLink for their patience, support and feedback during the redesign phase. We hope you will continue to send us your comments and suggestions! And if you’ve never visited the site before, take a look at www.enablelink.org.

Some of the new features we have added to EnableLink include a host of accessible chat rooms and message boards. They’ve been set up to make it easy for people to connect with others, share ideas, discuss issues and maybe even make new friends. We’d like to hear your ideas at info@enablelink.org regarding chats in which you’d like to participate. We also invite you to make use of our message boards. Check them out at www.enablelink.org by clicking on "Message Boards" in the left-side menu.

And don’t forget to share! Send your events, announcements or classified ads to info@enablelink.org and we’ll include them online.

OFFICIAL CIAP LAUNCH

We’re excited to announce the official launch of the Community Information Access Project (CIAP) at People in Motion on June 1, 2001, in Toronto. After months of development, hundreds of volunteer hours, and invaluable support from disability organizations, the project is ready to go online! The launch will include a live chat starting at 11:00 a.m. with the CIAP project staff as well as volunteers from some of the participating communities. We welcome you to take the opportunity to find out about accessibility across Ontario and talk with the project’s staff and volunteers.

And remember -- we’re always looking for new CIAP volunteers. If you are interested in accessibility issues, have access to the Internet and can volunteer a few hours each month, we want to hear from you! To date we have volunteers from 20 locations across Ontario who have contributed to the project by providing accessibility assessments of businesses and services in their community. To find out more, join us online for the chat or visit the Canadian Abilities Foundation booth at People in Motion, June 1 and 2, 2001, at the Queen Elizabeth Building, Exhibition Place, Toronto.

For more information about CIAP please contact Christine Staddon, Volunteer Coordinator, at (416) 923-5948; fax: (416) 923-9829; or e-mail: christine@enablelink.org.

CHAT ROOM EVENT FOR YOUNG WORKERS

Join us for an online session in the Injured Workers’ Chat Room on EnableLink! The topic will be Young Workers -- and we hope that a number of young workers will join in on June 15, 2001, from 1:00-2:00 p.m. EST.

Why do we need to pay attention to young workers in the workforce? Because they have a higher rate of injury, they may not be in appropriate jobs -- and they may not be asking the right questions to keep themselves safe.

Join us for a discussion of industries that young workers work in, the types of risks they face and the resources which are there for them.
