Calling Community Volunteers!

The Community Information Access Project (CIAP) is an important initiative of the Canadian Abilities Foundation. With start-up sponsorship from the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recreation, CIAP provides useful and up-to-date disability-related information from participating communities. We are proud that the information is soon to be posted on our website, EnableLink!

We hope to encourage businesses, tourism facilities and services to make welcome the growing population of Canadians who require universal access -- by highlighting those that are already realizing the benefits of being accessible to all.

Sound interesting? Want to get involved, but not sure if you live in a participating community? Well -- your volunteer involvement will automatically make your community a participating community!

As a volunteer for CIAP, you will be asked to give eight hours of your time a month to assess the accessibility of various buildings, events and services in your community. You will be given a survey of questions and asked to post your findings on the EnableLink website. If you are interested in this project but are new to computers, we will be glad to train and assist you as you get started.

INJURED WORKERS’ RESOURCES

Although the entire EnableLink website serves as a resource for injured workers, a specific section has been dedicated exclusively to meeting their specialized needs. In the Injured Workers Resources section on EnableLink, you will find all of the following:

- A look at past articles in ABILITIES magazine specific to injured workers
- A list of events specifically for injured workers and those who work with them
- A list of organizations specific to injured workers, providing an opportunity to link up with other injured workers
- A list of the Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada and links to their websites

Also included in this section are the following direct links to information provided on EnableLink.

- A growing list of cabs, buses and other accessible transportation services from cities around the world!
- A list of advocacy and support groups that are out there and ready to help
- The chat room, which is available to talk to other injured workers about issues that concern you
- A list of Canadian websites, with hotlinks across the country
- A list of over 5,000 disability organizations in Canada
- A list of international websites, with hotlinks around the world

The Forum section highlights Canada’s consumer groups, government departments and corporations, providing the reader with regular updates, opportunities and perspectives.

The National Employment Service Directory is a workforce re-entry guide intended to serve the very best interests of employers, employees and people with disabilities looking for work.

The Product and Service Catalogue lets you know who has what and how to get it.

And a list of the Provincial/Territorial Advisory Councils and Contacts for disability information in your province or across the nation is also available.
