Early in July of this year, the print edition of the Globe and Mail ran a story by an anonymous author, C. Smyth, entitled
A difficult choice and the follow through. That letter was, in my opinion, sad, frustrating, even infuriating for anyone who truly appreciates the relationships they are in with people who live with disabilities - me included. Here's a short quote to give you the flavour of Smyth's story, "... And now our unexpected late-life gift, our 19-week-old miracle is turning out to be tragically flawed."
I responded to this story with a letter to the editor as I would guess many, many others did as well. Krista Flint - pictured left - the Executive Director of the
Canadian Down Syndrome Society, also wrote a letter addresed not to the editor, but rather to the author,
An Open Letter To C. Smyth.
Krista's letter is well worth the read, but let me grab my favorite part and share it with you, "
... But C. Smyth…mostly I’m sorry for you. Sorry that you may be challenged to find beauty and a wealth of happiness in something unexpected that may, in fact be “imperfect.” "
