Read All About It!

By Lisa Bendall

A new all-inclusive guide for people who have developed a disability is now available. After Disability: A Guide to Getting on with Life, by Lisa Bendall, former managing editor of Abilities Magazine, is a friendly, encouraging and practical book that includes tips, strategies, resources and personal stories from Canadians living well with disabilities.

“During my years at Abilities, I answered countless phone calls from people who were dealing with sudden disability, or had loved ones who were,” says Bendall, whose husband has quadriplegia. “I often wished I could refer them to one book that had all the answers. The need for this book was really obvious to me. With the number of people with disabilities rising in Canada, that need isn’t going to go away.”

Topics covered in the book include transportation, self-advocacy, housing, health care, finances, employment, assistive devices and technology, family life, travel and recreation. The book has been endorsed by June Callwood, Patrick Watson, Jeff Adams and the Canadian Abilities Foundation’s president, Raymond Cohen, with a foreword by CityTV’s David Onley. After Disability is published by Key Porter Books (ISBN 1-55263-747-6), and is available for $19.95 at bookstores or online at http://www.amazon.ca .

Important Survey on End of Life Services for People with Disabilities
The Canadian Abilities Foundation (CAF) is supporting Hospice Toronto in an initiative known as the Transitions Project. The objective is to help gain a greater understanding of the needs of people with disabilities as they deal with end of life issues. Hospice Toronto is inviting people with disabilities and those who care for them from across Canada to participate in the survey. Your point of view is needed and would be very much appreciated.
